Colnago CLD 105 Bike
While makes a Colnago is the ride. Awkwardly fitting a frame will not allow that classic ride quality to show through. As a result, Colnago found it an absolute necessity to build the CLD, a Colnago that tweaks the geometry so riders of a smaller stature can experience the classic ride so many enjoy.
The first thing they needed to do was tweak the geometry. Relative to the size, and other Colnagos, this frame has a shorter reach and taller stack, aka a shorter top tube and taller head tube. This is a benefit to smaller, short-torsoed people. They can get the proper front-rear weight balance without reaching too low or too far forward or resorting to super-short stems and a tall stack of spacers.
The second thing they needed to do was tweak the material diet. As the frame is designed for the forces of smaller people, they decided they needed to change the lay-up of the carbon plies. Less material was needed, and this reduction made the ride quality consistent with that of bigger frames.
The changes above were the main tweaks to the concept. The carbon utilized is Colnagos pro-level fiber and resin mix. As such, youll find the CLD under their female pro riders. They ride it because it fits and the performance matches what youd expect from Colnago.
The front derailleur mounts to a hanger rather than clamping to the frame. This is because they typically eschew round tubes to get more directed performance from the frame elements. The seat tube starts as a teardrop at the top, and then has a cutout by the front derailleur to better tuck the wheel behind the seat tube, which allows them to utilize a shorter wheelbase and affect greater power transmission along with the improve aerodynamics.
Also consistent with Colnago is the proprietary teardrop seat post with 15mm of setback. Posts contribute to the ride, so Colnago wanted to control for itand its included with the frameset.
As youd expect with Colnago, the headset is their proprietary semi-integrated design, supporting a tapered steerer tube and the bearings sitting in replaceable cups. The bearings are supplied by FSA, with an 1 1/8 race at the top and 1 ¼ at the bottom. They also route the cables internally, and the system allows for the easy switching to electronic shifting if you ever desire to make that upgrade. When you go electronic, the battery can be run internally or externally.
The CLD is finished with narrower handlebars and shorter cranks, reflecting the focus on making the CLD easy to fit for harder-to-fit people.
