New and improved, the best of both worlds. Now Shimano’s second tier groupset takes the 11 speed functions of the 6800 mechanical groupset and pairs it with Di2 technology used in the 6770. This does not make it some sort of mongrel though. Weight has been shed, shifting has been improved and design has been tweaked to make this the most complete Ultegra groupset yet.
Here at Sigma Sport we have pieced together the ultimate electronic package for your new build or to treat your current steed to a serious electronic upgrade.
A replacement to the popular Ultegra 6770, Shimano have used ST-6870 shifters, very similar to Shimano’s flagship Dura-Ace Di2 lever in shape. Slimmer than the 6770, to give better ergonomics and an improved grip when out of the saddle. Also new is the shift button shape and texture, focusing purely on ease of use. 20 grams lighter than it’s predecessor and now with the advantage of being able to brake and gear changes now simultaneously.
The rear derailleur’s functions are now customisable, with the E-Tube software, allowing the rider to alter the speed of shifting, ideal for when you want rapid shifting down the cassette in a sprint.
Five unique shifting speeds should keep everyone happy and all with clockwork precision.
Cleaner wiring makes fitting the groupset easier and aesthetically keeps your bike looking clean and uncluttered. 21 grams lighter than the previous 6770 rear derailleur as well. Impressive, with all these technological advances and a lighter unit.
Up front and changes have been made to the front derailleur as well. 12 grams lighter and a sleeker design.
The Electrical componentry of the Ultegra 6870 Di2 groupset is complimented by the same Chainset, Brakes, Bottom-Bracket and Chain found in the mechanical 6800 groupset. The Ultegra 6800 Chainset is built upon Shimano's Hollowtech II technology, renowned for its incredible strength to weight ratio and ability to efficiently maximise power through the cranks.
A choice of chain ring variations allows for plenty of versatility, whether you are sprinting in your local road race, climbing an Alpine mountain or hurtling across the Ardennes cobbles, there will definitely be a gear ratio for you. All coming with an 11-28 cassette, giving you plenty of options.
Internal battery keeps everything tucked away, giving your bike a clean look, yet is still easy to hand when needed and a charging port near the handlebars makes for quick and easy charging, whether using the mains or your computer.
Shimano's 6800 Brake Calipers offer the rider improved feel and modulation, with a spring tension adjuster for a more precise set-up. Shimano claim that, thanks to new brake pad compounds, braking power is increased by 20% in dry conditions and 100% more in the wet, when compared to previous generations.
All this adds up to a more refined, lighter and more versatile Di2 groupset.
